Inverness defender Josh Meekings cleared for Scottish Cup final

Inverness Caledonian Thistle defender Josh Meekings can play in the Scottish Cup final after his retrospective one-game suspension was dismissed.

The Highlanders appealed against a Scottish FA ban after Meekings handled a goalbound Leigh Griffiths header in the 3-2 semi-final win over Celtic.

On Thursday, an independent judicial panel cleared the Englishman, 22, to face Falkirk in the 30 May showpiece.

A delighted Meekings said on Twitter: "Back to business now. Cannot wait."

SFA compliance officer Tony McGlennan had charged Meekings with breaking disciplinary rule 200 by "denying the opposing team an obvious goalscoring opportunity by deliberately handling the ball".

But it is understood the independent panel decided that it had been "an honest mistake" by the officials and that they were not minded to change the referee's decision.

In his report, referee Steven McLean had explained he had sought the advice of Alan Muir - the official behind the goal - and was told by him that he thought the ball had struck the defender's head.

As the panel gathered to make their decision, Inverness manager John Hughes was critical of the SFA for bringing a case of hand ball to the judicial panel for the first time.

"I think the whole of Scottish football, or British football, know there is a real injustice here," he said.

"First and foremost, he shouldn't be up there in the first place.

"I am a little bit embarrassed. Scottish football is getting dragged through the mud a little bit and I think there's a little more to it than we're seeing.

"You can open up a whole can of worms and, even if it goes in our favour, I don't think we have heard the end of this.

"If this is what goes on in Scottish football, I don't know if I want to be part of it.

"I am really disillusioned with it, but the amount of phone calls and texts from people I respect in the game have probably rekindled my fight to make sure I'm not going to lie down and not going to buckle."

Hughes, who said the disciplinary procedure needed reform, claimed it was not the first time that Inverness have been treated unfairly.

"Going back to semi-final kick-off times, playing Hearts at Easter Road right in the middle of Edinburgh... I just think sometimes Inverness get treated with contempt and I just think this is the next version of that," he said.

Inverness chairman Kenny Cameron expressed his delight for Meekings.

"The result means that the club can now fully appreciate the achievement of reaching it's first-ever Scottish Cup final," he said.

Meekings' hand ball came at a time when Celtic were 1-0 ahead, but Inverness went on to win after extra-time.

Celtic, who had goalkeeper Craig Gordon sent off, wrote to the SFA to ask why Meekings was not dismissed and a penalty awarded.

Gary Warren, Meekings' regular central defensive partner, was alreadysuspended for the final after picking up a second yellow card.

Middlesbrough maintained their push for automatic promotion to the Premier League with a hard-earned win over high-flying rivals Wolves.

Boro raced into a 2-0 lead in the opening 11 minutes, Jelle Vossen side-footing the first from close range following Patrick Bamford's pass.

Bamford added the second when full-back Tomas Kalas ghosted into the box before squaring for the striker to lash home.

Wolves pulled a goal back when Bakary Sako broke in the box and scored.

The win lifts Boro to third in the Championship table, above Watford who play on Wednesday at Nottingham Forest. Wolves are three points off the top six.

The Teesside club are one point outside the automatic promotion places with three matches remaining.

They travel to second-placed Norwich on Friday for a game which could have huge consequences in the race for automatic promotion.

Middlesbrough then face lowly Fulham on 25 April before finishing their league campaign at home to struggling Brighton on 2 May.

Boro boss Aitor Karanka had to endure several anxious moments before victory was confirmed against Wolves but the Spaniard will be pleased with his side's lightning start.

They were ahead after three minutes when Chelsea loanee Bamford selflessly pulled the ball back for Vossen to fire past Carl Ikeme.

Boro who found the net again after 11 minutes when Czech full-back Kalas - also on loan from Stamford Bridge - ghosted into the right side of the box before squaring for Bamford to score.

Wolves pulled a goal back when Edwards picked out Sako with a long ball across field, and the Mali international broke into the box before thumping a left-footed effort past Dimi Konstantopoulos.

The visitors should have levelled midway through the second half when substitute Scott Golbourne picked out Rajiv van La Parra in space at the back post, but his first-time effort rattled the bar.

Uefa increases Champions League & Europa League pot to £1.67bn

British clubs playing in the Champions League and Europa League from next season will receive a share of a 2.24bn euro (£1.67bn) prize pot.

Uefa is to increase funding by nearly a third from 1.66bn euro (£1.2bn).

The deal will also see money being distributed more evenly, with Europa League participants getting increased revenue in the qualifying rounds.

Uefa president Michel Platini said: "Uefa should work with associations and clubs to find the best solutions."

Uefa has also agreed to give European Club Association members at least 200m euro (£145m) from Euro 2020 revenues for releasing their players.

This is an increase of 50m euro (£36m) from Euro 2016 for ECA members, which includes the Premier League's biggest clubs as well as sides from Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
