West Ham deservedly top the Winners, with Chelsea, Anthony Martial and others close behind. Arsene Wenger the old dog who can’t learn new tricks? Be careful what you wish for.” These examples are taken from the first page of Google for a search of ‘West Ham be careful what you wish for’, but there are sure to have been many others telling West Ham just how lucky they were to have had Sam Allardyce. Rather than paying the price for ambition, Davids Gold and Sullivan and Karren Brady will be toasting the name of their new manager. The champagne sure will taste sweet. There is no doubt that allowing Allardyce to leave the club without a replacement lined up was a risk, but fortune has favoured the brave. Interest in Jurgen Klopp and Rafael Benitez came to nought, but Slaven Bilic has instilled both a team spirit and counter-attacking style that has taken West Ham to third in the Premier League. It has also accounted for Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City away from home. Whatever else the club achieve this season, that is a remarkable achievement. I resisted the temptation to join the BCWYWF brigade, and not only because of Allardyce’s record of two victories in his final 17 matches at the Boleyn Ground. The only clubs West Ham beat competitively in 2015 under Big Sam’s management were Hull (now in the Championship), Bristol City (now in the Championship), Burnley (now in the Championship) and Sunderland (trying their best to get into the Championship).

It was a victory for Chelsea, but a defeat for football. The game turned - and was disgraced - by an incident two minutes before halftime as Gabrielwas sent off for flicking out at Diego Costa about three yards in front of the referee Mike Dean.

Gabriel only had himself to blame for his stupidity, but his fault was to be naive in the face of targeted cynicism. Diego Costa and his provocations have become a blight on the game. Santi Cazorla was also sent off 12 minutes from time as Arsenal finished the game with nine.

With 11 men, Arsenal had defended relatively well; with 10 it had no chance, and conceded eight minutes after half-\time as Kurt Zouma glanced in a free-kick from the much-improved Cesc Fabregas, his first Premier League goal.

Fabregas wasn't the only Chelsea player to produce his best performance of the season so far. Nemanja Maticand Eden Hazard both looked livelier, adding weight perhaps to the theory that Chelsea's sluggish form so far this season was the result of a lighter than usual preseason as it looks to avoid the sort of fatigue that afflicted it in the final months of the last campaign. Whatever positives there were, though, were overshadowed by Costa.

He then shoved Laurent Koscielny in the face and then swiping an arm at the Arsenal defender. Costa mystifyingly went down, then got up in a fury, chest-barging Koscielny, who was knocked to the ground. Gabriel raced over and squared up to Costa for which both were booked, before dimly carrying on the antagonism in the center-circle as play was about to restart.As early as the second minute, the Spain international had dived in an attempt to get Francis Coquelin booked, and wagged an imaginary card to encourage Dean to show a yellow.

Arsenal could have few complaints about the red shown to Gabriel, but Costa's crimes were far worse and probably added up to four yellows and a red before half-time. This isn't a one off: this is just how he plays.

"He can do what he wants he stays on and everybody else who responds to him has to be sent off," said a clearly furious Wenger. "It's unacceptable what he does. He hits him in the face before the foul. He gets always away with it. It's honestly surprising. I don't understand Mike Dean's decision at all. Why does Diego Costa stay on the pitch? That Gabriel is sent off I accept: he is not to act at all. He will do the same next week and the week after and get away with it. He uses well the naivety of Mike Dean today."

Repugnant as Costa's behavior was, he is remarkably good at being an irritant: almost unbelievably, he hasn't been sent off since Dec. 2012. And he remains popular, with Chelsea fans chanting his name, weirdly proud of a man who sullies their club and the sport.

Ultimately, he won them the game and, perhaps, when you've suffered your worst-ever start to a Premier League season, that outweighs all else. As he came off having been substituted nine minutes from time, Mourinho shook his hand warmly.

"I played against Arsenal 12, 15, 18 times [it's 15] and only once he didn't moan," said an unrepentant Mourinho, deflecting by alluding to two penalties he claimed his side should have had. "And on that day we lost the game, we lost the Cup [the Community Shield in August], it was not good for us. We behaved in a fantastic way, no excuses, not crying, not moaning. I played my first derby on 20-something of September 2000, Benfica against Porto and I told my players before the game to win derbies you need emotional control. I played derbies in Portugal, Spain, Italy and England and it's something I repeat before every derby. It's a basic thing of the game.

The ill-feeling and bad faith, the - let's call it what it is - cheating, made a mockery of the grudging prematch handshake between the managers. It was initiated by Mourinho, who waited at the end of the tunnel so Wenger couldn't avoid him as he left the dressing-room to take his place in the bench, but when one of his players behaves as Costa did, it's a pathetically empty gesture.

More surprisingly, Branislav Ivanovic, having been left out of Wednesday's UEFA Champions League victory over Maccabi Tel Aviv, was recalled as captain to make his 61st consecutive Premier League start.Zouma was included in place of John Terry, presumably omitted because of fears about his lack of pace against Walcott and Sanchez.

Given the way Ivanovic has struggle for pace, particularly on the turn this season, there had been a thought that Alexis Sanchez might destroy him, but the Chilean has been out of sorts this season and was involved only intermittently.

Arsenal brought back all six players who had been rested for the 2-1 defeat away to Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League on Wednesday, and pursued a policy similar to that that had won the Community Shield in August, packing men behind the ball, retaining two banks of four when out of possession and looking to exploit the pace of Walcott on the counter.

Mourinho, in typically pointed style, spoke then of Arsenal abandoning its philosophy and perhaps there was an element of that. Chelsea had most of the ball in the first half, but aside from a couple of speculative long-range efforts, it only created two clear chances. To that extent the plan was working although Theo Walcott offered little outlet at center-forward and kept being caught offside.

The acrimony and Dean's haplessness carried over into the second half. Koscielny was fortunate to get away with a dangerous challenge on Fabregas and, although Oscar was booked for what appeared a retributive foul on the defender, he might also have seen red.

Still, there could be few doubts about the red shown to Cazorla. Already booked for a foul on Pedro in the first half, he collected his second yellow for a wild lunge on Fabregas.

The game, though, had long gone and Chelsea added a second in injury-time as Hazard's shot deflected in off Calum Chambers

Swindon are a game away from ending a 15-year absence from English football's second tier after a thrilling play-off semi-final against Sheffield United.

The Robins were 2-0 up inside 10 minutes thanks to Ben Gladwin's brace, before Michael Smith extended the lead.

Jamie Murphy and Chris Basham made it 3-2 and Steven Davies replied to Smith's penalty after the break.

Jon Obika looked to have settled it but late goals from Matty Done and Che Adams pulled United level on the night.

However, Swindon held on to win the tie 7-6 on aggregate - setting a new record for the highest number of goals in a play-off semi-final - and Mark Cooper's side will now take on Preston in the League One play-off final at Wembley on 24 May.

For Sheffield United, their torrid run continues, with the Blades suffering their eighth consecutive play-off defeat, while the loss also ensures they will spend a fifth successive season in League One.

Swindon - who finished fourth - will face a Preston side who ended the season with a 10-point advantage over the Robins and who sealed their place in the final on Sunday by completing a two-legged victory over Chesterfield.

Swindon reached Wembley the hard way, having looked to have secured victory on more than one occasion in an enthralling second leg.

Gladwin, who missed a penalty in the first leg four days earlier, gave Swindon a stunning start with his half-volley from 20 yards powering past Mark Howard, before he tapped home Nathan Byrne's cross at the back post for 2-0.

The Robins were three goals up inside 18 minutes, and 5-1 up in the tie, with Smith showing good tenacity to win back possession and fire in from close range.

Blades had a lifeline less than 60 seconds later when Murphy's shot deflected in off Nathan Thompson and Basham's powerful diving header from Bob Harris's cross reduced the deficit further.

Swindon had their fourth goal of the night when Jermaine Hylton was brought down in the box by goalkeeper Howard and Smith converted from the spot.

Just as the tie looked over, Davies's header from another Harris cross made it 4-3 on the night, before Swindon substitute Obika dinked home to make it 5-3.

The game was not over yet though, as first Done slotted home for 5-4 and then in the last minute Adams equalised for the visitors.

Swindon held on through seven minutes of injury time, with the final whistle sparking a pitch invasion and wild celebrations.

Inverness defender Josh Meekings cleared for Scottish Cup final

Inverness Caledonian Thistle defender Josh Meekings can play in the Scottish Cup final after his retrospective one-game suspension was dismissed.

The Highlanders appealed against a Scottish FA ban after Meekings handled a goalbound Leigh Griffiths header in the 3-2 semi-final win over Celtic.

On Thursday, an independent judicial panel cleared the Englishman, 22, to face Falkirk in the 30 May showpiece.

A delighted Meekings said on Twitter: "Back to business now. Cannot wait."

SFA compliance officer Tony McGlennan had charged Meekings with breaking disciplinary rule 200 by "denying the opposing team an obvious goalscoring opportunity by deliberately handling the ball".

But it is understood the independent panel decided that it had been "an honest mistake" by the officials and that they were not minded to change the referee's decision.

In his report, referee Steven McLean had explained he had sought the advice of Alan Muir - the official behind the goal - and was told by him that he thought the ball had struck the defender's head.

As the panel gathered to make their decision, Inverness manager John Hughes was critical of the SFA for bringing a case of hand ball to the judicial panel for the first time.

"I think the whole of Scottish football, or British football, know there is a real injustice here," he said.

"First and foremost, he shouldn't be up there in the first place.

"I am a little bit embarrassed. Scottish football is getting dragged through the mud a little bit and I think there's a little more to it than we're seeing.

"You can open up a whole can of worms and, even if it goes in our favour, I don't think we have heard the end of this.

"If this is what goes on in Scottish football, I don't know if I want to be part of it.

"I am really disillusioned with it, but the amount of phone calls and texts from people I respect in the game have probably rekindled my fight to make sure I'm not going to lie down and not going to buckle."

Hughes, who said the disciplinary procedure needed reform, claimed it was not the first time that Inverness have been treated unfairly.

"Going back to semi-final kick-off times, playing Hearts at Easter Road right in the middle of Edinburgh... I just think sometimes Inverness get treated with contempt and I just think this is the next version of that," he said.

Inverness chairman Kenny Cameron expressed his delight for Meekings.

"The result means that the club can now fully appreciate the achievement of reaching it's first-ever Scottish Cup final," he said.

Meekings' hand ball came at a time when Celtic were 1-0 ahead, but Inverness went on to win after extra-time.

Celtic, who had goalkeeper Craig Gordon sent off, wrote to the SFA to ask why Meekings was not dismissed and a penalty awarded.

Gary Warren, Meekings' regular central defensive partner, was alreadysuspended for the final after picking up a second yellow card.

Middlesbrough maintained their push for automatic promotion to the Premier League with a hard-earned win over high-flying rivals Wolves.

Boro raced into a 2-0 lead in the opening 11 minutes, Jelle Vossen side-footing the first from close range following Patrick Bamford's pass.

Bamford added the second when full-back Tomas Kalas ghosted into the box before squaring for the striker to lash home.

Wolves pulled a goal back when Bakary Sako broke in the box and scored.

The win lifts Boro to third in the Championship table, above Watford who play on Wednesday at Nottingham Forest. Wolves are three points off the top six.

The Teesside club are one point outside the automatic promotion places with three matches remaining.

They travel to second-placed Norwich on Friday for a game which could have huge consequences in the race for automatic promotion.

Middlesbrough then face lowly Fulham on 25 April before finishing their league campaign at home to struggling Brighton on 2 May.

Boro boss Aitor Karanka had to endure several anxious moments before victory was confirmed against Wolves but the Spaniard will be pleased with his side's lightning start.

They were ahead after three minutes when Chelsea loanee Bamford selflessly pulled the ball back for Vossen to fire past Carl Ikeme.

Boro who found the net again after 11 minutes when Czech full-back Kalas - also on loan from Stamford Bridge - ghosted into the right side of the box before squaring for Bamford to score.

Wolves pulled a goal back when Edwards picked out Sako with a long ball across field, and the Mali international broke into the box before thumping a left-footed effort past Dimi Konstantopoulos.

The visitors should have levelled midway through the second half when substitute Scott Golbourne picked out Rajiv van La Parra in space at the back post, but his first-time effort rattled the bar.

Uefa increases Champions League & Europa League pot to £1.67bn

British clubs playing in the Champions League and Europa League from next season will receive a share of a 2.24bn euro (£1.67bn) prize pot.

Uefa is to increase funding by nearly a third from 1.66bn euro (£1.2bn).

The deal will also see money being distributed more evenly, with Europa League participants getting increased revenue in the qualifying rounds.

Uefa president Michel Platini said: "Uefa should work with associations and clubs to find the best solutions."

Uefa has also agreed to give European Club Association members at least 200m euro (£145m) from Euro 2020 revenues for releasing their players.

This is an increase of 50m euro (£36m) from Euro 2016 for ECA members, which includes the Premier League's biggest clubs as well as sides from Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
